Meet a man who turned his difficult job into business. Alfred Matamela used to be a messenger for a company delivery parcels to different parts of Johannesburg starting in 1985. After long time of ridding something dawned on him. “Why can’t I teach other people how easy is it to ride motorbikes?” That is how Soweto Motorbike School located near Maponya Mall behind Lithlo Primary School came about. The other purpose is to popularize motor biking in the townships which used to be the white culture, and to give proper basic training, and realizing that even if we run campaigns for people to think bike, but if proper training is not given, accidents can happen and sometimes fatal.

People don’t know what they are missing, two wheels move the soul. Bike is a stress- reliever. The sound of it alone empowers you. Bikes are better than cars in many ways like saving on petrol and easing traffic congestion.

But they are dangerous too. You have to be very focused when riding a motorbike.

Soweto Motorbike School has attracted many people around Gauteng, Soweto and other areas etc, since it opened in March 2008. People come as far as from North West, but soon will have a mobile training in some of these Provinces. Among people trained, are doctors, traffic officers, advocates, Company CEOs, Managers etc. more interesting is the sudden interest of black ladies wanting to ride.

Alfred got four training bikes, all sponsored by Yamaha SA. Soweto Motor bike school does both bookings for learners and license. Students take within a week to get a learners and license within a month. To learn to ride one must know how to ride a bicycle first, is much quicker and easier.

Soweto Motor Bike School has also started youth development programs for youngsters’ between 10 & 15 years, training them with TTR110 Yamaha also sponsored by Yamaha. Parents have to sign indemnity for their kids in order to ride. Yamaha will later assess these kids and take them to higher level of riding and to become champion riders or racers.
